The law of non-contradiction is the foundation of thought. It simply means that something cannot be both itself and not itself. It is true because of the nature of God, who cannot deny Himself. If we admit contradiction in God as Hegel did, then true thought becomes impossible. Being conscious is not the same as thinking and irrationality destroys the very possibility of thought.

For several good articles on this subject, included thoughts by Cornelius Van Til [who uses the term "law of contradiction"] visit the Basket of Figs website by following the links below.

Van Til on Contradiction

Lying with Style

We do not say that the propositions of Scripture are derived from man's reason or logic, for that would be to deny both God and man's sin. Rather, the things revealed by God could not be known if they had not been revealed, both because of man's finiteness and his sin. Having said that, however, the propositions are given by God to reasonable creatures made in the image of God, who are expected to know the difference between gnats and camels, timbers and motes, oxen and men, figs and thistles.
